The advantage of an electric water heater over other water heaters is its versatility. The storage tank is suitable for any apartment or private house because it consumes only 1.5-3 kV of energy. The presence of hot water in the house is one of the main signs of comfortable housing. Water heaters provide housing with hot water in the right amount, it is available at any time, and it is cost-effective.
It should also be noted that the installation of a water heater in the house is not so difficult, they can be performed independently, having not too many tools and equipment at hand.
Select the installation location of the electric water heater
It is better to place the storage water heater closer to the cold and hot water risers in order to shorten the length of the supply pipes and ensure a good head. Boilers of small volume can be mounted on any wall, for models with a capacity of more than 80 liters, only load-bearing partitions made of brick and concrete are suitable: water heaters themselves do not weigh much, but together with water the load is significant.
With this in mind, there are not many suitable places in the apartment. As a rule, the choice is reduced to four options:
-above the toilet bowl in the toilet — next to the risers, does not take up space in the bathroom, can be hidden behind a false wall in a box with communications;
-above the bath — for combined and small bathrooms, almost does not interfere with the length of the bath from 160 cm;
-under the sink in the kitchen — only for small models of 10-15 liters;
-under the ceiling in the hallway or corridor — mainly used with horizontal boilers and to save space, but requires additional pipe laying.
In a private house, of course, there are many more options for placing a water heating tank than in an apartment.
Prepare tools and supplies to Electric water heater installation
– Water heater;
– hammer drill or impact drill;
– drill bit for concrete;
– wrench and pliers;
– anchor bolts or hooks;
– Safety valve;
– 2 flexible hoses;
– 3 tees with a diameter of ½ inch;
– 3 taps DN15;
– PVA cable 3 × 2.5;
– Automatic switch 16 A.
Immediately you need to ask about the wiring of the house. If it is old, it is unlikely to withstand a large load. Therefore, you may need to replace the power supply at home. The cross-section of the wire will help you calculate whether the wiring can hold the load. So that the wiring can withstand the load created by the 2 kW boiler, a wire with a cross-section of at least 2.5 mm is required.
Secure the water heater. Installation is carried out using hooks that are attached to the wall, they are put on the drive. Or a special bar, it is mounted to the surface with anchor bolts, and the boiler is already fixed on it.
Measure the dimensions of the water heater. After measuring the dimensions of the tank, estimate the location on the wall so that there are 2-3 cm gaps from the corners and edges of the niches, and the protective cover can be removed for repair and maintenance. From the ceiling, you need to make a gap of at least 5-7 cm to hang the tank on hooks or a plank.
Using a template, mark and drill holes for hooks or anchor bolts. If there is a ceramic tile on the wall, first go through it with a special drill for ceramics. Then drill the main part of the wall with a punch or drill.
Install dowels in the holes and wrap the hooks. Alternatively, insert the anchor bolts through the mounting plate holes into the wall and tighten them with a key. Attach the boiler to the fasteners. Use the level to check for horizontal and vertical deviations. Otherwise, there will be a risk of air jams and failure of the Heating Element.
Connect the water heater to the water supply
Hydraulic binding is performed according to the following scheme.
Screw a ½ – inch diameter tee onto the cold water pipe of the boiler, indicated in blue. Connect a safety valve to the lower outlet (with the arrow pointing towards the water heater), and a ball valve to the side outlet. It will come in handy when you need to drain the water. Seal all threaded connections with FUM tape.
Install a tee on the inlet tap of the cold water riser and connect the ball valve to it, first winding the FUM tape on the thread. Connect the new tap to the safety valve on the boiler using a flexible lead. Put the rubber gaskets under the cap nuts and tighten them with a key.
Screw a ball valve on the hot water pipe of the boiler, and a tee on the inlet tap of the hot water riser. Seal the entire thread with FUM tape and connect the new tap to the tee using a flexible liner with gaskets installed under the nuts. Tighten the connection first by hand and then with a key.
Put a hose on the spout of the safety valve and discharge it into the sewer. Water will sometimes drip through it when it is heated and expanded — this is normal. If the boiler is located above the bath, the tube can not be removed: the drops will just fall into the drain.
Connecting the electric water heater to the mains
If the water heater already has a ready-made cable with a plug, you just need to insert it into a grounded outlet. Extensions and tees cannot be used in this case, because the load on the network is quite high: all additional contacts will be very hot, which can lead to a fire.
In all other cases, you will need to connect the cable yourself. If it is not included-use a three-core wire with a cross-section of 1.5 or better 2.5 mm2. It is advisable to connect directly from the electrical panel.
Before starting work, disconnect the power supply by turning off the switch in the entrance. Lay a 3 × 2.5 mm2 cable from the apartment panel and connect it to the boiler via a 16 a differential circuit breaker. Then connect the wires to the terminal on the water heater: phase — to the l terminal, zero-to the N terminal, and ground-to the PE contact or to the housing.
Make a trial run of the water heater
Before turning on the boiler, you must fill the tank with water. To do this, turn off the tap on the DHW riser, and then open the valves at the inlet and outlet of the water heater. Turn on the hot water on the nearest faucet and wait a few minutes until the tap runs smoothly without interruptions and air. Close the mixer. Carefully inspect all connections on the boiler and make sure that there are no leaks. Turn on the water heater in the outlet or through the automatic switch and start the heating using the button or temperature controller.
The main mistakes made when installing an electric water heater
If the homeowner decides to connect the storage water heater on their own, under no circumstances
can you do the following:
– replace the components supplied with the device;
– connect the device to the AC mains if there is no water in the tank;
– disassemble the device when connecting the water heater to the electrical network;
– turn on or use an ungrounded appliance;
– operate the equipment with inappropriate water pressure parameters in the Central water supply;
– perform full draining of water from the tank during the operation of the storage boiler.
In addition, most importantly, under no circumstances should you neglect safety when connecting a boiler – a powerful electrical appliance. If you have any doubts about the correctness of independent installation work, it is advisable to ask for help from professionals.
