Thinking about transforming the ceiling? If your financial resources are limited, you can simply paint it. You can hire specialists, but at this event, there is nothing complicated and it is quite possible to do it yourself. Let’s look at how to simplify the process and get the perfect option.

How to prepare the ceiling surface for whitewash

If the old whitewash is more than a year old, then regardless of the condition, it should be removed. Any stains, cracks, dampness, traces of leaks are the basis for complete cleaning.
There are two ways: dry and wet. Dry is performed using a polishing machine. The dry ceiling surface is treated with a sanding disc until the whitewash or paint layers are completely removed. The advantage is absolute cleaning from any finish. The disadvantage is the presence of highly irritating dust, which requires the use of special protective equipment. The photo shows cleaning with a sander.
Wet-is reduced to copious wetting of the surface with warm water or soap solution with soda ash. The layer of whitewash and paint at the same time absorbs water, swells, and becomes loose. It is removed using a conventional wide spatula.

The next stage of preparation is antiseptic treatment. It is mandatory, as it significantly reduces the risk of damage to the finish with mold or fungi. If there is already an infection, then its areas should be treated with special care – with special purchased means or a solution of copper sulfate
At the same time, you need to pay attention to the degree of damage: if the damage is deep, you will have to remove both the plaster layer and the base floor layer.
Priming and leveling – the composition of the soil is selected depending on the condition of the treated surface and subsequent finishing. When preparing for whitewashing or painting after whitewashing, the usual deep-penetrating primer is sufficient
If necessary, leveling, the ceiling is pre-primed, then cracks and irregularities are sealed with putty, such as gypsum, and newly primed.

To achieve an ideal appearance, it is recommended to sand the surface with sandpaper after the soil has dried.

Advantages of painting the ceiling

choosing materials for work

Why painting the ceiling is such a popular and practical? For the answer, we will name the main advantages of this type of finishing:

  • This type of repair is quite simple and quite accessible even to non-professionals;
  • The paint in the future does not provide for intricate care and is not at all capricious;
  • Durability factor – if the repair is carried out correctly, the paint will last a very long time;
  • Modern paints are resistant to abrasion and moisture, non-flammable, safe for human health, protect the surface from fungus, “breath” (pass air and steam);
  • This type of finishing is much cheaper than, for example, glued or suspended ceilings and other types of ultra-modern finishes;
  • Painted ceiling coverings always have an aesthetic, beautiful, and well-groomed appearance.

Getting started with the work-painting the ceiling

Before starting work, you need to purchase everything you need. The first and most important thing is to buy paint. Experts recommend that you pay attention to the water-based emulsion. It looks more aesthetically pleasing and is easier to clean. Unlike oil paint, water-based paint is easier to apply and it is much easier to wash it off from surfaces. To apply to the surface, you will need two rollers and a plastic tray. Why are there two rollers? One with a long pile for the initial application and the second with a short pile for the final layer of paint. It is not recommended to use foam rollers in this case. Although they are cheaper, when applying the paint layer can form air bubbles and uniform coverage will be difficult to achieve.

When all the necessary materials are purchased and ready for use, you can proceed directly to painting the ceiling. The first step is to thoroughly mix the paint until smooth. Many manufacturers of water-based paint on the packaging of their products in the instructions indicate the need to dilute the paint with water in a certain proportion. If it is not possible to mix with a construction mixer, you can use any available material, such as a stick or a bar of wood. Homogeneous, well-mixed paint is poured in small portions into a plastic tray. Starting painting, prepare a stepladder, check its stability, and only then proceed.

Thoroughly soak the roller with paint and be sure to roll it several times on the ribbed sides of the pallet to evenly distribute the paint on the villi and remove excess. In any case, do not neglect this stage. Since when you dip the roller directly into the paint jar and then apply it to the ceiling, you will get the uneven application, paint splashing on the surface, and increase the material consumption by several times. And after drying, the entire ceiling will be stained, which will have to be painted over again and again, which will further aggravate the situation.

Our goal is to paint the ceiling evenly and as quickly as possible. If you follow all the technology, then in half an hour the ceiling of a medium-sized room will be completely painted. From time to time, get down from the ladder and inspect the ceiling for any imperfections. The fact is that being on a stepladder, the viewing angle distorts the real picture. And after completing the work, you can find bald spots in the color layer. All defects must be eliminated before the first layer dries.

The final second layer can be applied only after the first one has completely dried. In any case, do not rush. Otherwise, the new layer will raise the first one and the whole process will be ruined. The final layer is applied according to the same rules as for the first one, only with a short-NAP roller. We are waiting for complete drying and the ceiling is ready!
