Self-leveling floor, what should I know about it?

Self-leveling floors are actively gaining market share. The reason for their great popularity is the durability of this material and its ability to smooth out any surface irregularities. Having started its offensive with industrial facilities, this type of floor decoration began to penetrate into residential construction.

The self-leveling floor is a seamless floor finish, a type of self-leveling floor screed. If the technology is followed, the self-leveling coating, in addition to the main functions of the floor covering, also independently levels the floor to a full horizontal surface.

According to the composition of the connecting substances included in the mixture, there are cement-acrylic, epoxy-urethane, polyurethane, and methyl methacrylate coatings. But the differences between them are insignificant. Therefore, all the pros and cons are relevant for any type of floor covering made of polymer materials.

MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY OF SELF-LEVELING COMPOUND FLOOR

All gypsum, anhydride, and cement substrates with a surface strength of at least 150 kg per cm are used for laying.

  1. Preparing a quality Foundation:

the surface is pre-cleaned of debris and dust, traces of oil, paint, and other substances that may later weaken the adhesion of the prepared mixture to the base;self-leveling floor, damping tape joints, cracks, and seams are sealed.

  1. Priming the subfloor. We use an epoxy or polyurethane primer

along the contour of the room along the walls and protruding elements, a damping tape is fixed. The thickness of the tape must match the thickness of the coating;

beacons are placed on the base prepared for filling. The correct installation is checked by the construction level;

a primer is applied evenly to the base, which is allowed to dry for 1-3 hours.

  1. ground loop Device (for antistatic coating); self-leveling floor antistatic as a current-carrying circuit, the copper tape is used, which is pasted in squares on a pre-primed base. Then a special ground anchor is installed that connects the current-conducting circuit of the antistatic floor to the common ground.

the device of the current-carrying ground is reduced to applying a special composition with graphite filler, which conducts the accumulated electric charge to the current-carrying circuit.

it is also possible to install a self-leveling antistatic floor by applying a special polymer mass containing a filler containing carbon fibers, which removes static electricity from the entire volume of the coating.

  1. coating (2 layers) – polyurethane enamel or epoxy compound; self-leveling floor the passage of the roller when preparing the mixture, you must clearly follow the instructions, observe the proportions. The solution must be stirred with a mixer at low speed, allowed to settle and re-stir. To avoid small air bubbles that impair the strength of the material, the solution layer must be rolled with a toothed roller.

During the curing period of the epoxy coating, it is necessary to exclude drafts and direct sunlight. Depending on the type of self-leveling coating and the materials used, the surface operation is usually possible within a few hours.

  1. Applying the finishing layer – polyurethane enamel or epoxy compound.

For a thin-layer finish, the mixture is applied over almost any base. Only the compatibility of materials should be considered.

A wide range of applications of the self-leveling floor, environmental friendliness, and easy way of arrangement, and a low price-perhaps this is what you need!

the finished self-leveling floor

Positive factors of self-leveling floor

1) Long service life. The self-leveling floor retains an attractive appearance for 15-30 years, is not exposed to an aggressive chemical environment, retains its integrity under the mechanical impact, and has a high degree of impact resistance.

However, there are nuances, such a floor is absolutely not suitable for hallways and other rooms where people walk in shoes, from the sand on the sole it is strongly scratched and quickly loses its appearance. This is a huge disadvantage of this coverage.

2) High environmental friendliness. This factor will be useful for families with children or for people with immune and allergic diseases. Polymer floors do not have connecting seams that can accumulate bacteria or develop fungi. They are antistatic, that is, they do not attract dust, do not react with substances that have fallen on them (even with acid).

3) Fire safety. Polymer flooring does not burn but may start to melt when exposed to high temperatures.

Negative factors of self-leveling floor

1) Complex and lengthy training. Before pouring the mixture, it is necessary to minimize the difference in floor height (the difference is not more than 4 mm), reduce humidity (otherwise the material will begin to peel off from the base), and thoroughly clean the surface.

2) problems with dismantling. Despite the high strength of the floor covering, defects may occur on its surface due to the expiration of its service life or installation errors. Modern methods of removing bulk coating are very time-consuming and require large financial costs. Repairing such floors is also a very expensive and complex process.

3) a Narrow range of design and color solutions. The limited width of the range of this type of building materials can prevent you from “fitting” them into the interior of your apartment. Although with the advent of 3D floors, this problem has almost disappeared.

4) Low temperatures. The self-leveling floor feels much colder than wood or linoleum, so it is better to use it either in combination with the “warm floor” system or in combination with carpet coverings. In Soviet-built houses, experts recommend that the floor be insulated before pouring the mixture.

5) High price. The cost of both the material and the installation work. m of the self-leveling floor is higher than the cost of any other floor covering.

Before starting any repair, you should weigh all the positive and negative aspects of a particular material. This is the only way to make the right choice.
